On Sundays at 4PM, “Bach um vier” (“Bach at four”) is one of our most popular concert series in Brühl. Andreas Spering was originally an organist, and for many years he toured the world as harpsichordist of the renowned ensemble Musica Antiqua Köln. In the “Bach at four” series he focuses on Bach cantatas, one of his greatest passions.

In a chamber music lineup, members of Capella Augustina (internationally recognized specialists in historical performance practice) and an ensemble of young singers usually present two Bach cantatas per concert; Andreas Spering conducts from the keyboard. He also gives a lecture introduction presenting each work’s content and structure to help the audience better understand and enjoy Bach’s music. “Docere et movere”: to teach and to move – that is how Bach would have put it, and that is what we seek in great artworks today: we want to learn something, and we want to be emotionally moved. The “Bach um vier” series highlights both aspects.
